The 1-Year Artist Diploma program is offered to students who have previously completed a Bachelor of Music Degree or its equivalent. Applicants must also demonstrate a performance level of at least a Conservatory Associate standard, and show evidence of exceptional performance ability. Canon Law

Professional

The study of canon law mainly consists of the study of the Code of Canon Law. A number of disciplines are related to this subject: theology of canon law, philosophy of law, fundamental concepts of Roman law, elements of civil law, history of the fundamental canonical structures of canon law, history of the sources of canon law, the relationship between the Church and civil society, and canonical administrative and judicial practice. We also offer an introduction to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, and the study of Latin, as well as optional courses, exercises and seminars.

Offered by the Faculty of Canon Law, the ecclesiastical programs in Canon Law also allow students to receive civil degrees, such as the Graduate Diploma in Canon Law, Graduate Diploma in Canonical Practice or Graduate Diploma in Ecclesiastical Administration, and the Master's in Canon Law.

Certificate in American Sign Language (CASL)

The Certificate in America Sign Language (CASL) program, offered by Carleton’s School of Linguistics and Language Studies, is designed for anyone wishing to benefit from an officially recognized capacity for communicating with members of the deaf community who use American Sign Language. Students in the ASL Minor are able to obtain a Certificate if they fulfill the additional requirements.

The CASL program may be taken simultaneously with a BA program in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, or with other majors, allowing you to graduate with both a degree and a certificate at the same time. You can also pursue this program as a post-degree certificate.

Certificate in Digital Communication: Social Media & Virtual Worlds

The Certificate in Digital Communication (CDC) helps students understand the best practices of social media, virtual worlds and emerging forms of online communication. The Certificate in Ethics is a program of study that may be completed in conjunction with any module in Philosophy (with the exception of a Minor in Ethics). The Certificate, offered through Western University, Department of Philosophy, is being offered as a response to a wide and growing interest in the ethical dimensions of professional and public life. The purpose of this program is to enable participants to strengthen and develop their understanding of ethics so as to enhance their ability to recognize and respond to ethical issues in a wide variety of social settings. The Certificate in Ethics will educate students in the essential concepts, central issues, history, and methodologies of ethical reasoning. The CTESL program, offered by Carleton’s School of Linguistics and Language Studies, is one of Canada’s oldest and best-known TESL programs. The CTESL program includes courses in theory and methodology, as well as a practicum that includes opportunities for classroom observation and supervised teaching in a variety of settings. With the proper course selection, the program may be taken simultaneously with the 4-year Honours program in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, or with other majors, allowing you to graduate with both a degree and a certificate at the same time. You can also pursue this program as a post-degree certificate.

The CTESL program concentrates on teaching English to adults, either in Canada or abroad. It is widely recognized in Canada as a qualification to teach ESL at the postsecondary level in private language schools, colleges and universities. Overseas, it can lead to teaching positions at the elementary and secondary school levels, as well as at the adult level.

The Certificate in Theatre Arts provides training in drama and theatrical performance that meets the requirements for Drama as a teachable subject in the Faculty of Education. In addition to 2.0 courses that study drama as a literary genre, the Certificate requires participation as either a member of the cast or crew for the Department of English’s Annual Fall Production (English 2041F/G), and two 0.5-credit summer courses offered in partnership with and on the campus of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (English 2042F/G and 2043F/G). Students who take this certificate in tandem with a module in English may count 1.0 course toward both.

Carleton has a new Certificate in Professional Writing. The Certificate in Professional Writing is designed to be taken concurrently with an honours undergraduate degree in English or Applied Language and Discourse Studies, or any other bachelor degree program where a student has second year standing and a CGPA of 7.5 or higher. To be eligible for admission, applicants must present a statement of purpose and a sample of their academic or professional writing and have permission of the Professional Writing Program.

Conflict Studies

University of Ottawa – Saint Paul University

Graduate

Saint Paul University offers an MA in Conflict Studies, which is conferred jointly by the Senates of Saint Paul University and the University of Ottawa. The focus of the program is on the ethnic and religious identity distinctions that characterize many deep-rooted conflicts. The program explores the meaning of and generates processes for reconciliation, healing, and structural change. It combines a social science orientation common to Conflict Studies programs with a philosophical, ethical and theological orientation. The field of specialization is ethnic and religious dimensions of conflict in Canada.

Program Objectives

  • - Analysis: To explore the connections between conflict, violence, social justice, conflict resolution and peacebuilding in human communities;
  • - Training: To develop the attitudes, knowledge, research and skills necessary to analyze ethnic and religious conflicts so as to cultivate peace;
  • - Outcomes: To produce graduates who are competent, to analyze ethnic and religious conflicts in a multidisciplinary perspective, and to devise and evaluate appropriate conflict resolution strategies.

Two levels of learning are distinguished:

  • - Foundational Level: This level entails intensive study of major themes in Conflict Studies. Graduate training is initiated in research skills and methodologies in preparation for the research project.
  • - Advanced Level: This level of study concentrates on the development of specific dimensions of Conflict Studies. Research seminars meet to define the problem, purpose, scope and methodology of the master’s research project.

Counselling and Spirituality

University of Ottawa – Saint Paul University

Professional

The Faculty of Human Sciences at Saint Paul University offers programs leading to a graduate diploma in Couple Counselling and Spirituality, and to a Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Counselling and Spirituality, all conferred jointly by the Senates of Saint Paul University and of the University of Ottawa, with which Saint Paul is federated.

The objective of the master’s program is to train specialists to counsel and guide couples or individuals with regard to their values and their spirituality, as well as both their individual and couple dynamics, and to prepare graduates for a career in research.

Each concentration of the MA program (individual counselling; couple and family counselling; spiritual care) includes three components: Knowledge acquisition; a research project or thesis; and professional practice.

The MA program is offered in French and in English on a full-time basis, with part-time registration permitted only under exceptional circumstances. In accordance with University regulations, students are permitted to write assignments, exams, and theses in either French or English.

A collaborative program in Women’s Studies at the MA level is also offered.

The MA is recognized by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (ACPA) and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

This program is intended for students with a year of undergraduate studies and is not direct entry from high school. You may apply after completing your first 48 credits and before completing your first 78 credits by presenting a portfolio containing work in both poetry and prose fiction, as evidence of writing experience.
