Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate that you can cope with the language demands of an English-language university.

If you apply to an undergraduate program at Lakehead University, you may meet our English language requirements if you successfully completed, or are in the process of completing, 3 full years of recent study in an English-language school system.

If English is not your native language, and you cannot verify that you recently studied in an English-language school system for more than 3 full years of full-time study, you will be required to present proof of English-language proficiency.

Lakehead University accepts the following as proof of English-language proficiency:

  1. successful completion of a recognized language test (i.e., TOEFL, IELTS, CAEL or MELAB) with the required minimum scores
  2. successful completion of Lakehead University’s Academic English Program
  3. successful completion of one of our approved Pathway Partner’s ESL programs

See more details about our English-language requirements.

Note: Some academic units may require a higher score; meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to Lakehead University. Grade 12 University English (ENG4U) cannot be used to satisfy the English-language proficiency requirement.
